JABberwocky Welcomes Mystic Author Jason Denzel

Mystic_DenzelIt’s time to issue a warm JABberwocky welcome to Jason Denzel!

Jason must be a Mystic (hence the ambiguity in the post’s title), because he’s pulled off something special—his debut novel, which was acquired by Tor Books on an exclusive submission, will come out this fall! The road to acquisition to publication can often take a year or more.

Mark your calendars for November 3rd, 2015. Better yet, you can already pre-order it.

Mystic tells the story of working-class Pomella, who is invited to compete for a position as the apprentice to the local Mystic, which flies in the face of local tradition—only nobility have historically been allowed. If she fails, she becomes an untouchable, outcast from the rest of society for the rest of her life. Pomella has a natural gift, but when she starts lying to get ahead, it threatens to blow up in her face.

When he’s not writing, Jason is also the founder of, the leading Wheel of Time community. If you’re a WoT fan, chances are good you’ve heard of it.

Welcome aboard, Jason! Hard as they are, publishing’s trials have nothing on Pomella’s. . .

Adam Rakunas is Now a Robot, Angry

ooh he fancyGood news everyone! WINDSWEPT by Adam Rakunas, his debut novel, has been sold to Angry Robot!

After reading this book, you’ll understand why we’re celebrating this two book deal with friend-of-the-agency Captain Morgan. We discovered Adam the “old fashioned” way. After rum-maging through “Fantasy and Science Fiction” we asked if he had a novel and sure enough – he showed us WINDSWEPT!  It’s a rum-soaked gonzo noir filled with sex, violence, and labor relations and will leave you begging for mojito! This “dark and stormy” novel follows union recruiter Padma as the deal of a lifetime falls apart in front of her and she has to scramble to save her city, her planet, and basically all of Occupied Space – all before Happy Hour.

Congratulations Adam!

It’s been a stellar few months for several JABberwocky debut clients and Adam’s wonderful news is only the tip of the iceberg. Stay tuned for more excitement!

Phil Jourdan at Angry Robot is the acquiring editor. Sam Morgan and Joshua Bilmes negotiated for JABberwocky. Translation rights are available, contact Krystyna. Audio rights are available, contact Sam.

Hollywood Comes Knocking for Sanderson and Older

Firefight cover Half-Resurrection-Blues-Final-Cover

We’ve had a lot of Hollywood-related excitement the last couple weeks, and now have big news to report: Both Brandon Sanderson and Daniel José Older have new option deals!

Brandon Sanderson’s #1 NYT bestselling Reckoners series (STEELHEART, FIREFIGHT, and the forthcoming CALAMITY) has been picked up by Twentieth Century Fox, for Shawn Levy’s Fox-based 21 Laps to produce. Levy has produced and directed dozens of films, including Real Steel, This Is Where I Leave You, and the Night at the Museum series. We think David and the Reckoners are in great hands!

Daniel José Older’s Bone Street Rumba series, which just launched January 6th with HALF-RESURRECTION BLUES, was optioned by Tony award-winning actress Anika Noni Rose for her Roaring Virgin Productions. Rose voiced Disney’s first African American princess, Princess Tiana, in The Princess and the Frog, and starred in the hit film Dreamgirls. She received a Tony Award for her role in Caroline or Change and was recently nominated for another Tony for her standout performance in A Raisin in the Sun, alongside Denzel Washington.

Regarding the announcement, Older said, “I’ve been a fan of Anika Noni Rose’s brilliant work on stage and screen for years. She has a deep understanding of narrative, craft, and truthtelling in general and the Bone Street Rumba series in particular, and I’m beyond thrilled to see this project come together.”

These are huge developments, and we couldn’t be happier for Brandon and Daniel!

Another #1 NYT Bestseller for Brandon Sanderson!

It’s already a very exciting start to 2015 for JABberwocky: FIREFIGHT debuted this week at #1 on the New York Times Bestseller list! This long awaited second installment in Brandon Sanderson‘s Reckoners series is also a #9 USA Today bestseller, and a #14 Indie Children’s bestseller. FIREFIGHT is #3 on Bookscan’s juvenile list and #23 overall! The release of FIREFIGHT also triggered a return to the NYT list for the first Reckoners novel, STEELHEART, which is on its second week at #11.

This is Brandon’s third #1 New York Times bestseller in the past year and a half, after STEELHEART debuted at #1 on the New York Times list in October 2013 and WORDS OF RADIANCE, the second Stormlight Archive debuted at #1 in March 2014.

FIREFIGHT was also listed on “The Best Science Fiction and Fantasy Reads for January” by Kirkus, who gave it this glowing praise: “Big in size and vision…the rare middle volume that keeps the throttle open and actually moves the story along significantly...This sequel to Steelheart keeps its foot on the gas pedal and is the prose equivalent of an action packed comic.” FIREFIGHT has already been sold in fifteen markets and more deals are in the works!

His upcoming novel GEMINI CELL, the first book in his brand new Operator series, has already been recognized as well: Buzzfeed and Kirkus have both listed it on their top picks for the new year!

Also on Buzzfeed’s notable books for 2015 are Daniel Jose Older’s HALF RESURRECTION BLUES and Jim Hines’s UNBOUND. Kirkus also highlighted UNBOUND, as well as Brandon Sanderson’s upcoming Reckoners novel, FIREFIGHT. Daniel’s upcoming Young Adult novel, SHADOWSHAPER and Brandon Sanderson’s next Mistborn Adventure, SHADOWS OF SELF, have both also been listed on‘s list of “Mind-Blowing Science Fiction and Fantasy Books to Look Out for in 2015.”

WORDS OF RADIANCE, the second book in Brandon Sanderson’s Stormlight Archive series, was a finalist in the Goodreads Books of the Year Awards. It was also picked for year’s best lists by Amazon, Fantasy Literature, Swide Magazine, BookLoons, Bibliosanctum, and the Arched Doorway, which also included SHATTERING THE LEY, by Joshua Palmatier. Swide Magazine also included John Sprunk’s BLOOD AND IRON and Charlaine Harris’s MIDNIGHT CROSSROAD on their best of 2014 list.

OFFICER-CADET by Rick Shelley is a military science fiction classic. Rick Shelley was himself a veteran of the U.S. Army, and his experience and knowledge shine through on every page. The first of the 6-book Dirigent Mercenary Corps, OFFICER-CADET is a great introduction to the subgenre.

NPR Loves JABberwocky

NPR recently released their Best Books of 2014 list, and two of our clients make an appearance! Included on this year’s list is THE TROPIC OF SERPENTS by Marie Brennan, the second novel in the Memoirs of Lady Trent series. Book critic K. Tempest Bradford says of SERPENTS: “Marie Brennan expertly weaves together fantasy and science, history and memoir, and adventure and politics … [and] offers a nuanced and engaging look at how politics can influence the “pure” pursuit of knowledge.” The first novel, A NATURAL HISTORY OF DRAGONS, was similarly lauded last year.

Also on the list is KALEIDOSCOPE, an anthology with stories by JABberwocky client E.C. Myers, alongside pre-eminent writers in the genre like Garth Nix, Sean Williams, and Ken Liu. The anthology focuses on and explores diverse voices and characters in science fiction and fantasy for young adult readers. Bradford notes that the stories offer perspectives that are not “all about how being not white, not straight, not able-bodied, and not rich are the problem.” Rather, the character’s diverse backgrounds “inform the way each person deals with” their particular challenge.

UPDATE: WORDS OF RADIANCE on The Der Spiegel Bestseller List!

We are thrilled to share that WORDS OF RADIANCE, the second installment in Brandon Sanderson’s #1 New York Times bestselling Stormlight Archive series, is #42 on the Der Spiegel Bestseller List in Germany! Last week it debuted at #48 and this week moved up six spots on the list. Der Spiegel is a weekly German news magazine and one of Europe’s largest publications of this sort, with a weekly circulation of more than one million. This is the first time Brandon has been on this list, and he joins fellow JABberwocky clients Charlaine Harris and Peter V. Brett with this achievement.

In other news, WORDS OF RADIANCE was ranked #10 on Amazon’s top 20 “Best Books of 2014: Science Fiction & Fantasy” list! He is in good company on the list, along with George R. R. Martin, Anne Rice, Patrick Rothfuss, Diana Gabaldon, and more.

WORDS OF RADIANCE debuted at #1 on the New York Times bestseller list in March, and with this placement on the Der Spiegel list, has now become an international bestseller. This marks the second time one of Brandon’s books has become an international bestseller – The Rithmatist hit #3 on the Eslite bestseller list in Taiwan earlier this year.

YALSA Names The Rithmatist and Steelheart to Their Top Ten!

We are thrilled to share Brandon Sanderson‘s most recent recognition: YALSA has chosen not one, but two of Brandon’s titles for their Teens’ Top Ten List! THE RITHMATIST was selected for the #3 spot and STEELHEART was chosen as #8. YALSA, the Young Adult Library Services Association, is a national group of librarians and advocates who work to improve library services for teens, and the titles on this list were chosen by students in sixteen school and public library groups around the country.

This news is particularly exciting at this moment as FIREFIGHT, the sequel to STEELHEART and the second book in The Reckoners trilogy, is forthcoming in January 2015 from Delacorte and a second installment in The Rithmatist series is under contract to Tor. Brandon has received a huge amount of recognition for these books, including a Whitney Award for Best Youth Novel and Best Young Adult Speculative Fiction for Steelheart, as well as spots on best-of lists by The New York Times, Apple, Kirkus, and Audible. With this YALSA selection, we’re happy to see that these books continue to impress and delight young readers and librarians alike!

New Additions to the JABberwocky eBook Program

We’re honored to include in our ebook program two standalone mystery novels by #1 New York Times bestselling author Charlaine Harris! Best known for her Sookie Stackhouse series, Charlaine made her debut with these first-rate small town Southern mysteries.

SWEET AND DEADLY features newspaper reporter Catherine Linton, who’s returned to her hometown Lowfield, Mississippi, certain that her parents’ recent death was no mere accident. But her investigation unearths more secrets than she bargained for, and now she’s both the sheriff’s lead suspect and the killer’s next target. Originally published in 1981, Birmingham News called it a “home run the first time out.”

A SECRET RAGE follows former NYC model Nickie Callahan as she re-assimilates into small town Southern life — and to catch the rapist terrorizing the community when the violence affects Nickie personally. Charlaine’s second novel is a bit of a departure from her more lighthearted Southern mystery series like Aurora Teagarden or Lily Bard. While it contains features readers will recognize from those later series, The Boston Globe summed it up best: “But more than [a good mystery], the book is a powerful study of rape and its consequences… a powerful vision of women fighting together against a common enemy.”

Don’t miss out on these early Charlaine novels!

The Midnight Queen

It’s been two weeks since Sylvia Izzo-Hunter’s debut novel THE MIDNIGHT QUEEN hit shelves, and the incredible reviews have been pouring in! Sylvia was even chosen for an author spotlight by Romantic Times, who called the book “creative and suspenseful — and never predictable…a novel that readers will be unable to put down.”

THE MIDNIGHT QUEEN, the first installment in the Noctis Magicae series, tells the story of Gray, a student at Oxford’s Merlin College, being educated in the lore of magick. But when he accompanies four fellow students on a mysterious midnight errand that ends in disaster and death, he is sent away in disgrace, to spend the summer at his professor’s country estate. There, along with the professor’s daughter Sophie, Gray discovers that there are secrets in their magic society and what Gray witnessed in Oxford might be even more sinister than it seemed.

Bookworm Blues has called THE MIDNIGHT QUEEN “a powerfully atmospheric novel…a love story that will warm your heart, and a story of magic and struggle, truth and might, in the face of all odds, with some stunning writing that will really hook readers and brings them into the colorful world that Hunter has created.”

Be sure to check out the rest of the reviews over at Sylvia’s author page!

A NATURAL HISTORY OF DRAGONS wins the Chesley Award!

Huge congratulations to Todd Lockwood, who won the Chesley Award for his brilliant cover art for Marie Brennan’s World Fantasy Award-nominated A NATURAL HISTORY OF DRAGONS!

The Chesley was handed out at LonCon 3, and we think it was richly deserved. Here, for your admiration, is the cover:

Drinking Midnight Wine Comes to an eReader Near You

It is our great pleasure to announce that Simon R. Green’s novel DRINKING MIDNIGHT WINE is once again available as an ebook! It’s one of his few standalone titles, and he packs in a whole series worth of adventure, action, and wise-cracking fun.

Complete with angels, gods, and monsters, it’s been compared to Neil Gaiman’s American Gods (The News-Star, Monroe LA) and urban fantasies in the vein of Charles de Lint and Tanya Huff (Library Journal). It’s a great entry point for those new to Simon’s works, and a wonderful visit for long-time Simon fans. (And fun fact, Nightside fans, Leo makes an appearance!)

There is a world beyond the world

It figures. Just when Bradfordian bookshop clerk, Toby Dexter, finally works up the nerve to talk to his secret crush, she darts into an open door. Toby follows, and in that second, everything changes. Though it still looks like Bradford-on-Avon, the town’s suddenly chatty ATM and river mermaids are the first clues that something is quite out of place—namely, Toby. The moment he stepped through that door, Toby entered the magical parallel world of Mysterie.

Our ordinary dimension—the one Toby knew as Bradford-on-Avon—is actually Veritie, a mere shadow of its alter ego, Mysterie, where magic and myth, gods and monsters, living legends and walking nightmares reign. And Toby isn’t the only recent arrival. A cunning and vicious demon—The Serpent’s Son—has returned to Mysterie, accompanied by a malevolent new ally, intent on bringing down both dimensions.

Toby can remain mortal, return to Veritie, and try to convince himself that he had a bad pint of bitter that night. Or he can stay in Mysterie, join forces with his new friends Leo Morn and his Brother Under The Hill, and try to stop The Serpent’s Son. The choices Toby makes will have dramatic consequences for both worlds. It may not be the first time Mysterie’s wars have spilled over into our reality, but if Toby fails, it could be the last.

Simon R. Green, New York Times bestselling author of the Deathstalker series and the Nightside series, brings his trademark wit and inventiveness to his beloved hometown of Bradford-on-Avon, in this charming standalone urban fantasy novel.

It’s now just a few short weeks — i.e., Pretty Darn Quick — before thousands of sf/f writers, fans, publishers, editors, etc. will be heading out on the Docklands Light Railway to Loncon 3 at London’s Excel.

Here’s Joshua’s schedule:

Thursday 13:00 – 14:00, London Suite 5 (ExCeL)
Joshua Bilmes (not sure if writer Lauren Beukes will also be doing a Kaffeeklatsch at the same time, or if we’re doing a shared Kaffeeklatsch)

Finding an Agent
Saturday 12:00 – 13:30, Capital Suite 16 (ExCeL)
A great query letter is all you need! Write a great manuscript and the rest doesn’t matter! Network at conventions and you’re in good shape! These nuggets of advice and dozens like them float around the writersphere as gospel. How many of these have a ring of truth? What is the secret to finding an agent? And what does an agent do once you have one? Our agents will decrypt the process.
This panel will be moderated by Betsy Mitchell, the sf/f consultant for Open Road Media, a freelance editor, and the person who launched my career. Jacey Bedford, Ian Drury and John Jarrold are the co-panelists.

Adult Readers Within the YA Market
Saturday 13:30 – 15:00, Capital Suite 10 (ExCeL)
Age recommendations on books are meant to be a useful feature for readers. What are the risks and benefits associated with age classification, and is it a necessary evil or a marketing mistake? And what’s all this we hear about the emerging “New Adult” market? Will this have on YA books? Moreover, how do the growing number of adult readers affect the YA market? Are we leaving actual young adult readers behind in favor of attracting adult buyers?
Panelists include: Sarah Ash, whom we are honored to have in the JABberwocky e-book program; Tor UK editor (and acquiring editor for Tor UK of Brandon Sanderson’s YA novel The Rithmatist) Bella Pagan; and Ben Jeapes

JABberwocky VP Eddie Schneider and JABberwocky’s foreign rights mastermind Krystyna Lopez round out our team at Loncon.

JABberwocky clients in attendance include Myke Cole, John Hemry, Peter V. Brett, Tanya Huff, Adam Rakunas, Simon R. Green and Joshua Palmatier. Several of them will not only be at Loncon but will also be having signings and other events in the UK in the days before or after. Our client Mark Hodder is a finalist for the Sidewise Award, to be presented at Loncon.

More JABberwocky Travel: Lisa Rodgers At Cascade Writers Workshop

While Sam is living it up at NAFiC in Detroit, Lisa Rodgers (@_LisaRodgers) will be attending Cascade Writers Workshop in Kent, WA! That’s just south of Seattle, for those not familiar with the Pacific Northwest. Cascade Writers is a weekend-long workshop that brings together writers from a variety of genres and in various stages of their writing careers.

Things begin Thursday evening with a social mixer and readings. (Cross your fingers for me that I’ll successfully vanquish the Jetlag Beast and will be able to stay for all of the wonderful reading selections!)

Friday will feature 2 critique sessions with my workshop participants. I’ll also be joining fellow agent Bree Ogden for the What an Agent Wants panel that evening, where we’ll discuss how to track down the right agent for your work, and the dos and don’ts of query letters and short pitches.

As with Friday, Saturday will feature more critique sessions! Additionally, my afternoon is dedicated to the Pitch Session.

No day would be complete without a critique session, so it’s fortunate that Sunday begins with one! I’ll then have my one-on-one discussions with my workshop participants. Topics can range from the manuscript we workshopped to more nuts-and-bolts/the business writing, depending on what each writer would like to discuss.

Between the critique and pitch sessions, Cascade Writers has arranged a slew of educational panels for its participants. Topics range from indie authorship, to marketing, to life after being published, as well as several panels on the craft of writing.

While Cascade Writers Workshop isn’t open to the public, keep an eye out for when registration opens for 2015!

Detroit Rock City: Come See Sam Morgan at Detcon1!

Not the hershey kind.

This is Detroit formal wear, right?

Are you ready to rock and roll all night and party every day at this year’s North American Science Fiction Convention (NASFiC)/DetCon1? If that answer is yes, then you’ll have plenty of chances to see one of our agents Sam Morgan throughout the convention in Detroit. And since I’m the one writing this, can we skip the third person? That makes me feel weird.

Anyway, here’s my schedule (all times are EST). Be forewarned, these are going to ROCK:

7/17 Thursday 7:00pm
Nicolet A
How do writers choose story titles? What makes a good title? Who gets to decide what the title will be? And which comes first, the story or the title?
I’m moderating this panel!

(7/18) Friday 10:00am
KaffeeKlatsch 1
A small group discussion led by literary agent Sam Morgan. Your opportunity for a more informal discussion with one of our participants. (Limited seating. Sign up at Info Desk.)
Come talk to me at a round table.

7/18 Friday 1:00pm
Ambassador Salon 2
Our panel discusses the challenges of writing humor and comedy in SFF. Is it as easy as it looks? Or as hard as some people say it is?
I’m looking forward to all of my panels, obviously, but I’m REALLY looking forward to this one. I have thoughts and feelings about humor and comedy. Also our client Jim C. Hines will be on the panel as well. Here’s his schedule if you’d like a chance to see him.

7/19 Saturday 1:00pm
Mackinac East
Agents and editors talk about the sorts of projects that interest them individually and answer general publishing questions.
I get to talk about what I’m looking for in potential clients. It’ll basically sound like an OKCupid profile.

7/19 Saturday 6:00pm
Mackinac West
Villains drive conflict in a story, and offer a mirror reflecting a special view of the protagonists. Our panelists discuss their favorite villains, whether drawn from their own work or the creation of others, and tell us what they love about their villain and why.

I did this at this year’s Balticon and had a blast so I will probably do this again. As you can see, I have a few hours between panels. I may post up at a random table and start hearing pitches. If you miss a chance to meet with me at one of these formal panels or pitch sessions, absolutely feel free to come up and talk to me about anything! Follow me closely on Twitter to find out when and where I’ll be!

World Fantasy Award Finalist: Marie Brennan’s A NATURAL HISTORY OF DRAGONS!

We’re pleased to announce that the first book in Marie Brennan’s Lady Trent series, A NATURAL HISTORY OF DRAGONS, is a finalist for the World Fantasy Award for Best Novel! She’s in good company on the shortlist with titles like Neil Gaiman’s The Ocean at the End of the Lane. It’s been a stellar year and a half for the series, with the first book praised by NPR, Slate, Booklist, and Kirkus, among others, and was a semifinalist for the 2013 Goodreads Choice Award. The second book, THE TROPIC OF SERPENTS, received a starred Kirkus Review, and was also reviewed by The New York Times and The Washington Post. Being a finalist for the World Fantasy Award is just the latest (and perhaps brightest) feather in the cap of this series. The winners will be announced on November 9th at the World Fantasy Convention in Arlington, VA.
