Caitlin Sangster

Caitlin Sangster is the author of the Last Star Burning trilogy, She Who Rides the Storm, and A Baker’s Guide to Robber Pie.

She grew up in the back woods of California and would rather go hiking, running, swimming, or general outdoorsing than just about anything else. If there aren’t any mountains, it doesn’t count as a real place. At eighteen, Caitlin moved to XinJiang, and at twenty-one it was Taiwan. She did eventually buckle down and graduate from Brigham Young University with a BA in Asian Studies and is now that person you avoid at parties because she’ll probably start talking about Shang dynasty oracle bones. She lives in the Chicago area with her husband and four children.

Gods-Touched Duology

She Who Rides the Storm (#1)
"Sangster (Last Star Burning, 2017) is known for her varied casts of characters, and this heist novel will certainly capture the attention of fans of Leigh Bardugo's Six of Crows"

Booklist

"Will leave readers clamoring for more."

Kirkus

"[A]n ambitious, complex story with drama, magic, intrigue, and murder"

SciFiChick.com

"This book is truly incredible and has all the elements to make this the next young adult fantasy sensation!"

Under the Covers

"Caitlin Sangster's latest novel is her most ambitious book yet. She Who Rides the Storm is a tightly-woven fantasy heist with memorable characters and a killer premise."

Brandon Sanderson, #1 NYT bestseller, Mistborn, Stormlight Archive series

"Ghosts. Tombs. Betrayals. With multiple unfolding mysteries, and complex and varied magics, She Who Rides the Storm digs right into a new, imaginative world, leading the reader deeper into the history--and the truth--of a divided land. Nothing is what it seems."

Jodi Meadows, New York Times bestselling coauthor of My Plain Jane, author of The Orphan Queen and Before She Ignites

"If there was a Venn Diagram that included Six of Crows’s ensemble cast, Avatar the Last Airbender’s sweeping worldbuilding, and Sanderon’s funky magic systems, this is the center of that diagram."

He Who Breaks the Earth (#2)
"A serviceable duology closer..."

Kirkus

"One of the things that has stood out from the very beginning of this read was the quality of the writing itself. It is clear that the author has a very clear vision for her characters, both their strengths and flaws....A solid conclusion to a unique YA fantasy duology."

The Library Ladies

"The tone of this sequel is darker, and the theology of this world is delved into more so than in the first book. But it’s not all gloom and doom – humorous moments are still sprinkled throughout, and there’s no shortage of twists and surprises. The ending is fast-paced, but also very satisfying, and I think readers will be pleased. At nearly one thousand pages this duology requires a time investment, but with complex world-building, high stakes, and strong characterization, it’s an engaging read I’d recommend to fantasy fans."

Teri Polen Reviews

Last Star Burning

Last Star Burning (#1)
"Brimming with rich detail in an Asian-inflected alternative world that's lightly touched with Maoist terminology and concepts and helmed by achingly real characters, Sevvy's story is thrilling to get lost in. By the end, readers will be clamoring for more. Incredibly immersive and tightly plotted."

Kirkus

"Loosely inspired by China’s Cultural Revolution, Sangster’s vibrant debut is set in a world where class and status define its citizens; some genuinely surprising twists highlight Sev’s struggle to accept a reality vastly different from what she has known."

Publishers Weekly

"The backdrop of vicious creatures coupled with adventures in which survival is not always assured will keep patient readers engaged."

School Library Journal

"A gripping tale of trust, class struggle, and betrayal."

The Candid Cover

"The whole premise of this book was really unique and I liked it – I haven’t read a good dystopian in quite some time so it was refreshing to pick one up."

Here's to Happy Endings

"I love how Sangster puts a fresh, riveting face on plot elements that could easily have seemed old."

Pages Unbound

"Caitlin Sangster's Last Star Burning opens with moves in an intricate strategy game, and the entire novel follows that initial scene. Set in a gorgeous, Asian-themed post-apocalyptic world, Sangster presents the reader with a fully-formed society, as fully inhabited by lies and deception, as human beings. With propaganda, the illusion of the greater good, and the stigma of illness heavily coloring the dark themes of this book, young readers will be forced to examine not only Sevvy's actions and motivations, but also their own. A rich and timely tale that twists and turns so quickly, you might get whiplash."

Aprilynne Pike, #1 New York Times bestselling author

Shatter the Suns (#2)
"Detail-oriented Sangster is a master of creativity when it comes to setting and action"

Booklist

Dead Moon Rising (#3)
“This is a timely way to enable discussion about how we recognize or categorize enemies and how political will enhances or inhibits aid to those in the world around us.”

A Baker’s Guide to Robber Pie
"In her middle-grade debut, Sangster brings readers an exciting tale of fantasy, questing, and finding one’s inner hero."

Booklist

"Sangster... writes in a jaunty, irreverent third-person voice that befits the book’s clever and principled protagonist."

Publishers Weekly

"This middle grade novel is as charming as it is mouthwatering ... Readers who are as adventure-seeking as Evie will want to join her as she takes on magical enemies with only her wits and baking skills."
