Writers Beware: Impersonation Scams on the Rise

6/12/2026

It has come to our attention that there have been many recent attempts from scammers claiming to be members of JABberwocky’s staff or claiming to be our clients. Please use extra caution and an abundance of skepticism if you recent an out-of-the-blue email from someone on our staff.

One sure sign of a scam or fraud attempt is a request for money; especially in exchange for a review or writing critique.

All (or most) of our agents use the QueryTracker website for receiving and requesting manuscripts. So if you receive a message outside of that service then that should be taken as a red flag.

We do NOT use @gmail.com email addresses for literary agency business, so treat that as another suspicious sign.

If you have any doubts, please poke around on this website as you will be able to find each employee’s actual email formula listed.

Another great resource available to everyone is SWFA’s “Writer Beware” website. Publishing-related scams are not new and that website contains a lot of wonderful information on how to distinguish the real from the fake.
