ONE OF THE BOYS Wins the 2026 Stonewall Book Award

1/26/2026

The JABberwocky team is absolutely thrilled to celebrate ONE OF THE BOYS by Victoria Zeller, which has just won the 2026 Stonewall Book Award!

The American Library Association announced the 2026 Youth Media Awards, honoring the outstanding children’s and young adult titles from the previous year. The ceremony feature many prestigious awards including the Caldecott Medal, the Corretta Scott King Awards, and of course, the Stonewall Book Awards. The Stonewall Book Awards are given annually to one children’s book and one YA book of exceptional merit relating to the LGBTQIA+ experience, along with a few honorable selections.

And ONE OF THE BOYS certainly fits the bill! It became an instant New York Times and Indie List bestseller upon publication and earned three starred reviews. Publisher’s Weekly noted how “Zeller artfully exposes the tender underbelly of locker room posturing, presenting a subversive, experience-informed interpretation of toxic masculinity” throughout the story, while Booklist and Bookpage both specifically deemed the book a standout debut, among other praise.

ONE OF THE BOYS follows Grace Woodhouse, a rising football star with an amazing girlfriend and close circle of friends — before she came out as trans. As senior year begins, Grace is struggling to find her place in early transition, new social circles, and a life without football. But when her skills as the best kicker in the state prove to be vital, her old teammates beg her to come out of retirement, dragging her back into a sport—into a way of life—she thought had turned its back on her forever.

Congratulations, Victoria!
