JABberwocky Literary Agency is pleased to announce that we have recently welcomed a new client, Katie Garner.

Katie Garner grew up in western North Carolina and earned a BA with honors in English and an MA in Teaching from UNC Chapel Hill. She teaches in public schools in Durham, North Carolina, where she lives with her husband, son, and corgi named Cheese. She has been interested in complicated female characters since she read Harriet the Spy in fourth grade and happily spends her free time making up her own as an adult.

Katie is represented by Susan Velazquez Colmant, who is thrilled to work on Katie’s speculative women’s fiction debut, THE EIGHTH DAY! The novel follows Georgia, a beleaguered mother and wife who is starting to feel resentful that she never has the time for the things that make her “her.” On her 40th birthday, she wishes she had more time for herself and she wakes up in the “eighth day,” an extra day between Sunday and Monday, where she can do whatever she wants. Georgia confides in her best friend Laurel about this magical space and to her dismay, Laurel starts visiting the eighth day to avoid facing the problems in her own marriage too. Further complications arise in the eighth day when Georgia becomes attracted to a widower still grieving his wife and Laurel becomes embroiled in a feud with another visitor. Soon, Georgia realizes that the eighth day is not providing the peace and time for herself that it promised. What was once a respite from her grueling schedule of relentless responsibilities is now another space demanding her time and energy. In order to save her marriage and her sense of self, Georgia must learn to assert her needs and desires in her real life–throughout all the days of the week.
