The cat is out of the bag: Aurora Teagarden is returning to Hallmark Movies & Mysteries!

Variety reports that the franchise returns with a new prequel series starring Skyler Samuels (The Gifted, Scream Queens) as young Aurora, fresh out of college and back in her hometown of Lawrencetown.

Aurora Teagarden is based on the long-standing mystery series by #1 bestselling author, Charlaine Harris, following a small-town librarian and true crime enthusiast who finds herself solving real-life murders and mysteries in her own life. The first book, REAL MURDERS, published in 1990 with nine books to follow in the years afterwards and has sold 2.1 million copies worldwide since its publication.

The books were adapted into films beginning in 2014, initially starring Candace Cameron Bure (Full House) as Aurora herself. The original series would be among one of the highest-grossing franchises in Hallmark Movie history. While the series ended when Bure decided to move networks, it didn’t stay down for too long!

In addition to Samuels, Evan Roderick (Arrow) will play young Arthur and Marilu Henner (L.A. Story, Taxi) will return as Aida Teagarden.

Hallmark’s press release reveals:

“While her mother, Aida, struggles to keep her newfound real estate business, Aurora supports herself by working as a teacher’s assistant in a crime fiction class, and waitresses at the local diner at night, where she shares her love of researching true crime with her friend Sally and police officer Arthur. When Sally’s fiancé doesn’t show up at their wedding rehearsal, Maid of Honor Aurora gets Arthur to help her search for him. When they discover a body, everyone assumes it is Sally’s tardy groom, but when it turns out to be someone else, Sally’s fiancé becomes the main suspect.”

There’s no exact date as to when the prequel series will air later this year, but you can bet we’ll be watching when it does! Congratulations Charlaine!
