The 2023 Nebula Award finalists were announced last night by the Science Fiction Writers Association (SFWA), and we’re pleased to say that JABberwocky client Samantha Mills is a finalist!
Sam has been nominated for the Nebula Award for Short Story for “Rabbit Test,” a brilliantly heartbreaking short story about abortion through the journey of a young woman living in a dystopian near-future world. It was published in the November 2022 issue of Uncanny, run by fellow JABberwocky clients and co-editors Lynne M. Thomas and Michael Damian Thomas.
“Rabbit Test” is not the only great work of fiction Sam has been working on — her debut novel, The Rise and Fall of Winged Zemolai, sold to Tachyon earlier this year. The book is told in two timelines, alternating between an idealistic and youthful woman’s rise to power as she helps her city fall under militarized rule, and then her fall from grace two decades later as she unravels the truth of what really happened. We can’t wait to see it on the shelves soon!
The Nebula Awards will be presented at the Nebula Conference in May 2023. We’ll be crossing our fingers until then. Congratulations, Samantha!
