We’re thrilled to share that Samantha Mills won the 2023 Nebula Award for Best Short Story this weekend!
Sam’s short story, “Rabbit Test“, weaves together a brilliantly heartbreaking story about abortion laws throughout history and into the near-future, tying together several perspectives of women and people with uteruses, and their struggle for bodily autonomy. It was published to much acclaim in the November 2022 issue of Uncanny, run by fellow JABberwocky clients and co-editors Lynne M. Thomas and Michael Damian Thomas.
The Nebula Awards took place in Anaheim, California, this past weekend, where Sam was able to accept her award in person. Agency founder Joshua Bilmes was also there to cheer her on!
“Rabbit Test” is not the only great work of fiction Sam has written — her debut novel, The Rise and Fall of Winged Zemolai, sold to Tachyon and is forthcoming in 2024. The book is told in two timelines, alternating between an idealistic and youthful woman’s rise to power as she helps her city fall under militarized rule, and then her fall from grace two decades later as she unravels the truth of what really happened. We’re excited to see the book on store shelves soon!
Congratulations to Sam on a well-deserved Nebula Award!
