The Bronze Lie Sold to Osprey

We’re thrilled to share that Myke Cole’s newest work of nonfiction, THE BRONZE LIE: SHATTERING THE MYTH OF THE SPARTAN WARRIOR SUPREMACY, has been sold to Osprey!

Myke’s first nonfiction title, LEGION VERSUS PHALANX, was described as “highly entertaining” (The Armourer) and “the most accessible introduction to ancient warfare that I’ve ever read” (Adventures in Historyland). David Frum, a speechwriter for President George W. Bush, tweeted, “We all know who wins, but what a great explanation of WHY.”

THE BRONZE LIE will explore the legend of the Spartan warriors and how their reputation as the greatest fighters in history is largely undeserved. With a background in history and several series under his belt, Myke is the perfect messenger to set the record straight.

Myke’s announcement tweet for this book went viral. After 20 hours, it had 230,000 views, was liked 3,000 times, and had multiple influencer engagements, including Malcolm Nance, Stonekettle, and John Scalzi.

This is Myke’s most successful book announcement to date and we’re excited for the future of this title.

WASTE TIDE is ‘Best of the Month’ by Apple Books and Kobo for May!

If you are still looking for a good book for the month of May, Apple Books and Kobo have both selected WASTE TIDE by Chen Qiufan as a Best of the Month book pick.

WASTE TIDE follows Mimi, a migrant waste worker on Silicon Isle, a small island off the coast of China where towering heaps of electronics are sent to be recycled. As Mimi struggles to carve out a better life on the polluted island, there are many forces—ruthless local gangs, ecoterrorists, money-hungry American investors, and a Chinese-American interpreter searching for his roots—that threaten to change life as she knows it. As the forces collide, Mimi must decide if she will be a pawn in someone else’s game or change the rules altogether.

Apple Books Review praised WASTE TIDE as “imaginative and all the more haunting for being rooted in reality.”

Vagrant Queen TV Series!

VAGRANT QUEEN is going live-action! SYFY announced they’re picking up the series for a 10-episode TV series adaptation.

This breakout graphic novel series from Vault Comics debuted in February 2018. Written by Eisner and GLAAD Media Award-nominated author Magdalene Visaggio (Kim & Kim, Eternity Girl, Transformers vs. Visionaries), and illustrated by Jason Smith, this exciting, violent, snarky space opera is not to be missed.

“VAGRANT QUEEN follows Elida from child queen to orphaned outcast, as she scavenges the treacherous corners of the galaxy, always one step ahead of the Republic government out to extinguish her bloodline. When her old friend Isaac shows up claiming her mother Xevelyn is still alive, they head off with their new ally, Amae, to stage a rescue that will take her back into the perilous heart of her former kingdom and up against a deadly foe from her childhood, Commander Lazaro.”

The VAGRANT QUEEN cast includes Adriyan Rae to star as Elida, the titular vagrant queen. Tim Rozon will play Isaac in the co-starring role and Paul du Toit will play the villainous Commander Lazaro.

VAGRANT QUEEN’s creative team will be comprised of showrunner Jem Garrad (You Me Her, Android Unemployed),  Mika Collins (Deep Six) and Mariko Tamaki (Skim). Garrard herself will be stepping in the director’s chair for some episodes, as will Danishka Esterhazy (Banana Splits). Also aboard are executive producers such as Lance Samuels & Daniel Iron (Goalie), along with Vault Comics’ F.J. DeSanto & Damian Wassel.

VAGRANT QUEEN is set for a premiere on Syfy in 2020.

Welcoming JABberwocky’s newest employee: Bridget Smith

Five years ago JABberwocky had a total of 6 employees and was still settling into its new office space in Midtown Manhattan. We had moved out of our old space in Long Island City in March 2014 because the agency had continued to grow in size (in both its number of employees and its number of clients) and was no longer able to fit in such a small office.  A few years prior to that JABberwocky consisted of Eddie and Joshua working out a small apartment in Queens.

Flash forward to today and the agency is very excited to announce that it is continuing to grow and has hired its ninth(!) full-time employee: Bridget Smith.

Bridget has joined JABberwocky as its newest literary agent, complete with her own growing list of authors. We are very happy that she has joined our team and know that she’ll accomplish great things! Bridget will be opening for queries in the near future (once she has settled in) and her tastes in Middle Grade, YA fiction, Literary Fiction, and Science Fiction/Fantasy complement JABberwocky’s quite nicely.

Congratulations to Daniel José Older, Aliette de Bodard, and E.C. Myers for all being named to NPR’s Best Books of 2018! This also marks the sixth consecutive year in which a JABberwocky client has been named to NPR’s Best Books of the Year and the first year in which three (!) JABberwocky clients have made the list in the same year.

Older is on the list for his critically-acclaimed DACTYL HILL SQUAD, the first in his new middle grade series set in an alternate Civil War-era New York City, where dinosaurs still roam the Earth, centered on Magdalys Roca, a young Cuban-American girl with the ability to telepathically communicate with dinosaurs, as she leads her friends to rescue their fellow orphans from an evil magistrate. Older has previously made the NPR Best Book list for his novels Shadowshaper and

Shadowhouse Fall.

A Thousand Beginnings and Endings by [Oh, Ellen, Chapman, Elsie, Ahdieh, Renée, Charaipotra, Sona, Chhibber, Preeti, Chokshi, Roshani, de Bodard, Aliette, de la Cruz, Melissa, Kagawa, Julie, Kanakia, Rahul, Lee, Lori M., Myers, E. C., Pon, Cindy, Saeed, Aisha, Thakrar, Shveta, Wong, Alyssa]

De Bodard and Myers are on the list for their respective short story contributions to the anthology A THOUSAND BEGINNINGS AND ENDINGS, edited by Ellen Oh and Elsie Chapman.

The anthology focuses on folktale and myth retellings from South and East Asian cultures, with most of the contributors of South or East Asian heritage. Each story contains an author’s note with a summary of the original tale and why the author chose to retell it. de Bodard’s story, “The Counting of Vermillion Beads,” is a reimagining of the Vietnamese fairy tale “Tấm and Cám.” In “The Land of the Morning Calm,” E.C. Myers gives his take on the Chasa Bonpula, a Korean epic.

The Great (and forthcoming) JABberwocky Makeover

Stop us if you’ve seen this movie before, but JABberwocky will soon be taking off its thick-framed glasses and undoing its ponytail. By which we mean that the website that you used to sit next to in high school English class will soon be undergoing a major redesign.

Our agency has hired Claire Marion Design to help give us a stylish new look, after the firm came highly recommended by the Zeno Agency. We don’t yet have a date set for when the makeover will take place, but we will keep everyone posted.

However, we can tell you now that JABberwocky has already re-imagined its company logo and we are excited to debut it for the first time right here, right now:

That’s all for now and we will see you all lovely folks at the prom!

Brandon Sanderson’s DARK ONE

Brandon SandersonDeadline recently reported on DARK ONE, a new multimedia project from Brandon Sanderson! Vault Comics will publish the two-volume graphic novel series, co-written by Jackson Lanzing and Collin Kelly (Joyride, Hacktivist). Publishers Weekly reports that the first volume will be released in the Spring of 2019. FremantleMedia North American and Random House Studio will produce the TV series, and a podcast of the same title will further explore the world of DARK ONE.

The project is described as “a dramatic fantasy adventure spotlighting a young man who sees visions of strange and fantastical worlds, which he is told are just hallucinations. But this dark and deadly fantasy world that keeps coming to him is actually a real vision of another world – one where he has been prophesied to become a tyrant and destroy this land of interesting creatures, sporadic electrical currents and a darkening landscape.”

Sanderson says, “I’m used to painting a picture in words. DARK ONE came to life when I freed myself to think of it as a project for actual visual media, with the setting, characters and outline all coming together.”

Sanderson is a multiple #1 New York Times bestseller and a Hugo Award winner, selling over 12 million copies of his works worldwide. The second volume of White Sand, Sanderson’s first graphic novel series, published in February 2018, with volume three under contract to Dynamite Entertainment.
