Daryl Gregory wins the 2015 World Fantasy Award!

Gregory’s novella, which features a group of likely-insane, horrific outcasts, also won the 2015 Shirley Jackson Award, and was a finalist for the Nebula, Locus, and Theodore Sturgeon Memorial Awards. It was chosen as a top pick by Locus, Book Riot, and The Book Smugglers, to name a few, and has received great reviews. STEELHEART picked for new NYC Reads 365 initiative

We are happy to share that Brandon Sanderson‘s STEELHEART has Steelheart-Reckoners-1-Brandon-Sandersonbeen chosen by the new NYC Reads 365 program for the 9th and 10th grade reading list. NYC Reads 365 is an independent initiative which encourages students to read for fun all year long. NYC Department of Education Chancellor Carmen Fariña summed up their intent: “Reading is not to take a test. Reading is for the rest of your life.”

In addition to this honor, STEELHEART has generated glowing critical reviews. Publishers Weekly has said, “The near-constant action, Sanderson’s whiz-bang imaginings, and a fully realized sense of danger (the brutal opening scene alone will hook many) make this an absolute page-turner.” In a starred review, Booklist raved, “Snappy dialogue, bizarre plot twists, high intensity action, and a touch of mystery and romance; it’s a formula that sucks readers into the prologue, slings them through one tension-filled encounter after the other, and then, at the strange and marginally hopeful conclusion, leaves them panting for the sequel.”

With reviews like these, it’s not hard to see why the first book in Brandon Sanderson’s Reckoners trilogy was chosen as one of the top books to read for fun. Pick up your copy now and catch up on the series before the final installment, CALAMITY, hits stores in February!

Charlaine Harris’s MIDNIGHT, TEXAS books in development at NBC!

61vMUhv3S5L._SX329_BO1,204,203,200_We are thrilled to announce that Charlaine Harris‘s Midnight, Texas series is currently in development as a new drama for NBC! Written/executive produced by Monica Owusu-Breen (Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.) and executive produced by David Janollari (Six Feet Under). Janollari says of Charlaine’s series: “It’s where humans and the supernatural co-exist, and where everyone has a secret. . .It’s equal parts humorous, sexy, and downright scary.” Critics agree—Romantic Times raved, “An unusual and highly entertaining new series. . .a supernatural mystery with a decidedly creepy edge!”

This will be the third time Charlaine’s work will be hitting the small screen—following the wildly popular True Blood, adapted from her Sookie Stackhouse novels, and the Aurora Teagarden movies which premiered earlier this year on Hallmark Movies & Mysteries. From Left to Right:
Tae Keller, Ben Grange, Estelle Malmed

Tae Keller has joined us as our new Foreign Rights assistant. While attending college at Bryn Mawr on Philadelphia’s Main Line, she discovered the joys of Hope’s chocolate macadamia cookies, and also interned at Puffin, Norton, and Writers House. She’ll be working with Krystyna Lopez on all aspects of our foreign rights business, from preparation of marketing materials at the start of our sales process through to the receipt of author copies of the foreign editions.  With the agency having arranged over 100 foreign deals in 2015 to date, for well over 200 books, there’s a lot to keep Tae busy.

Ben Grange is working three days as a week as an assistant to all of us.  An alleged Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup fan, Ben graduated Brigham Young University this past spring, and while studying in Utah interned at Shadow Mountain, Future House and A&B Literary Works.  Since moving to New York to pursue his strange dream of becoming a literary agent, he’s done additional internships at Dystel & Goderich and the Bent Agency.  He’ll be learning the ropes at JABberwocky, helping us with database projects, manuscript evaluation and lots lots more.

Estelle Malmed is working under Lisa Rodgers, facilitating the growth of our expanding e-book and POD program.  Her path to JABberwocky included stops at Random House, Simon & Schuster, and Hunter College’s Office of Graphic Design.  In her first weeks on the job, she’s tweeted up a storm to promote our e-book titles, reviewed files for forthcoming UK e-book editions of Jeri Westerson’s Crispin Guest books, put finishing touches on the forthcoming Toni L. P. Kelner collection Crooked as a Dog’s Hind Leg, and more.  She welcomed Tae and Ben with homemade lemon bars.

Three years ago, both Sam Morgan and Lisa Rodgers started as part-timers, and took practically no time at all to become full-time employees making major contributions to JABberwocky.  Join us today in welcoming Tae, Ben and Estelle to the JABberwocky team, and check back for regular updates on our expanding team.

We are pleased to announce that Daniel Jose Older’s SHADOWSHAPER has been nominated for the ALA Best Fiction for Young Adults list. This list is created once a year to provide school librarians with a resource to collect the best books for teens.

SHADOWSHAPER is an action-packed urban fantasy, filled with street art, Brooklyn house parties, zombies, and Caribbean magic. Kirkus calls it “Warm, strong, vernacular, dynamic–a must,” and New York Times Book Review says, “This is a world that readers cannot help wanting to live in.”

In other SHADOWSHAPER news, German rights were just sold to Carlsen. Congratulations, Daniel! This is a book you don’t want to miss.

SHERWOOD NATION named a 2016 Silicon Valley Reads pick

Silicon Valley readers are in for a treat: Benjamin Parzybok‘s SHERWOOD NATION Sherwood(buy|reviews) has been named a Silicon Valley Reads pick for 2016, alongside Emmi Itäranta’s Memory of Water.

The theme for the year is “Chance of Rain?” and we think SHERWOOD NATION is a perfect fit. The novel deals with the aftereffects of a severe drought in Portland, in which a micro-nation takes rise. It’s absorbing, prescient, and one you’ll want to read with a glass of water handy!

Silicon Valley Reads is an annual community reading program that serves the communities of Santa Clara County, California (including San José, Santa Clara, Palo Alto, Cupertino &c.). It grew out of a more traditional “one book, one community” program into one with greater breadth and depth, including a variety of community events, panel discussions, and the like.

Ben Parzybok will be participating in between 12–20 community events in the Silicon Valley over the course of 2016. He has more on his blog, and if you’re a Santa Clara resident, be sure to bookmark him for updates as the calendar of events expands.

Congratulations, Ben!

JABberwocky Welcomes K. Eason!

K. EasonHailing from the Golden State, K. Eason is the newest debut author on our client list. ENEMY and its sequel OUTLAW have sold to 47North!

With the cheeky opening words “Mighty Agent, Architect of My Future,” there was never any doubt that this query would lead to something special. And it didn’t disappoint! ENEMY is a deliciously dark and complex fantasy novel, featuring a half-blood heretic who must outwit vengeful gods and the local legion to save her partner, the Republic, and (maybe, if there’s any luck leftover) herself from conspiracy, murder, and war. K. effortlessly explores gender and genre norms while still delivering a fast-paced story of politics, magic, and vengeful gods.

Congratulations, K!

When not writing, K can be found picking up new life skills, ranging from martial arts (including a black belt in kung fu!), to Viking sword and shield work, to knitting.

Adrienne Lombardo at 47North is the acquiring editor. Lisa Rodgers negotiated for JABberwocky. For translation rights, contact Krystna Lopez.

Looking Ahead to the Next WorldCons (now with 100% more W.J.W.)

Shawn Levy, of Night at the Museum fame, is slated to direct the project and we’ve just found out that they’ve attached Carter Blanchard as the screenwriter!

Blanchard has recently finished writing the Independence Day movie sequel and will now turn his attention to adapting Brandon’s #1 New York Times bestselling young-adult novel. Who knew a dystopic, supervillan-filled future could look so bright!

Update @ 5:46pm – has some nice things to say about this news in their recent post today, including this gem:

“So, the superheroes are the bad guys, and the humans are fighting back. Which is a neat twist on the genre. It’s not a revolutionary one by any means, but it could be just the right hook to freshen up the genre and kick off a whole new franchise.”

Best of the Year, Halfway through the Year

We’re roughly halfway through 2015, and as we hit midsummer, we’ve had a number of clients pop up on best-of lists and receive special accolades and call-outs. That number? A lot:

Long Hidden coverFirst up, congratulations are in order for Daniel José Older! He and co-editor signal-to-noise-coverRose Fox have been nominated for the World Fantasy Award for their wildly successful LONG HIDDEN anthology (buy|reviews).

In further good news, both Daniel José Older’s SHADOWSHAPER (buy|reviews) and HALF-RESURRECTION BLUES (buy|reviews) were named to BookRiot’s The Best Books of 2015 So Far! Older, whose SHADOWSHAPER has four starred reviews to date, joins the likes of Ta-Nehisi Coates and. . .

. . . JABberwocky’s own Silvia Moreno-Garcia! Silvia was named to the list for her debut, SIGNAL TO NOISE (buy|buy|buy), and BookRiot wrote: “This little indie release deserves all the attention.” Check out a plethora of reviews we’ve compiled for the title.

Then we received some really great Mark Hodder news—his debut, THE STRANGE AFFAIR OF SPRING HEELED JACK (buy|reviews)—was named to Audible’s “10 Editors, 100 Books” list, in which editors recommended their favorite audiobooks ever.

Bu51+0pEJosfL._SX331_BO1,204,203,200_t wait, there’s more! We’ve learned that Adam-Troy Castro will have a story in the first-ever BEST AMERICAN SCIENCE FICTION & FANTASY, out this October. The titles of the stories are officially under wraps for now, so you’ll just have to pre-order. (It’s quite possible that a story from LONG HIDDEN appears in these pages as well. . .)

Last, but certainly not least, Brandon Sanderson‘s STEELHEART (buy|reviews) was just nominated for the Green Mountain Book Award up in Vermont! This marks the eleventh state award that the #1 NY Times bestselling novel has been nominated for. STEELHEART won the Kentucky Bluegrass Award just a week before.

If this isn’t enough to fill out your summer reading list, well, stroll on over to our buying guide, which we’ve just updated for July.
