JABberwocky Wrapped: 2021 in Review

12/20/2021

Hello readers, writers, and book-lovers!

We at JABberwocky wanted to try something new as 2021 comes to a close. This is an overview of the amazing work our clients have put out into the world this year and the exciting things our JAB agents have been working on all year!

In 2021, we’ve had over 40 client books published throughout the year — you can see the full list of titles at the end of this article. Additionally, we’ve grown to a team of 11 people this year, our largest roster in JAB history!

We’ve been really excited to see how lauded some of our clients have been in the media. Silvia Moreno-Garcia, Grady Hendrix, and Lilliam Rivera have had their books stamped with Starred Reviews and Most Anticipated and Best Of all year long. Brandon Sanderson was prolific as always, and had no less than five new books release this year (and many more in the works)! We were also very proud that longtime JAB client Charlaine Harris was named a 2021 Grand Master by the Mystery Writers of America for her significant contributions to the genre.

We’ve also had the pleasure of seeing our debut authors release their first book this year! From sweeping historical sagas to mind-bending time travel to Appalachian revenge thrillers, there’s a 2021 debut for everyone. We can’t wait to see what these JAB authors do next!

It was a good year on the film/TV front as well! Grady Hendrix has two of his books in development right now, with MY BEST FRIEND’S EXORCISM announcing its main cast in the spring. Announced in early fall, Edo van Belkom’s Wolf Pack series is being adapted into a television series by the creator of the 2011 show, Teen Wolf. And most recently, the film/TV rights for Ellery Queen’s novels and short stories have been optioned and an adaptation featuring the eponymous detective reimagined as a female detective is being scripted!

Our subsidiary rights team has been hard at work in 2021! They closed about 30 domestic audio deals this year, a mix of frontlist and backlist titles. They’ve also closed about 200 (!) translation deals and a dozen UK rights deals, as well as adding Arabic translation to our ever-growing list. A notable feat was a six-figure deal for simplified Chinese deal for various Ellery Queen titles, which was our biggest translation deal this year!

But wait, there’s more! We’re not slowing down as we head into 2022. Here are some of our forthcoming books that will be hitting bookstore shelves very soon:

And that’s a wrap! Thank you all so much for your support of our clients and our agency throughout this year. Happy holidays from the JAB team, and we’ll see you in the new year!
